Today, the Florida State Attorney’s Office released a version of Sanford Police Department’s original report in the Trayvon Martin George Zimmerman case, which includes additional information that was previously redacted in other versions. One highlight of this report is the results of the Computerized Voice Stressed Analysis (CVSA) test, which is basically a “lie detector” or polygraph test that George Zimmerman took on 2/27/2012.
During the test, Investigator W. Erwin asked George Zimmerman to answer two relevant questions regarding the night he killed Trayvon Martin:
ERWIN: Did you confront the guy you shot?
ZIMMERMAN: No.
ERWIN: Were you in fear for your life, when you shot the guy?
ZIMMERMAN: Yes.
According to the results of the test, deception in Zimmerman’s answers was “not indicated.” In other words, he passed the “lie detector” test according to their standards that is.
We weren’t satisfied with the notion that Zimmerman was asked two simple questions and was declared to be telling the truth by Sanford Police department. So, we decided to do a little research of our own, and you might be surprised by what we found.
Why These Test Results Do Not Mean A Thing
The first thing that you need to understand is that these tests are generally used to sway the public, due to their faith and acceptance of flawed and unscientific techniques.
For instance, the actual type of test George Zimmerman took was a Zone of Comparison (ZOC) Polygraph on a piece of equipment manufactured by the National Institue for Truth Verification (NITV). According to their website, “The NITV® is the manufacturer and sole source for the patented Computer Voice Stress Analyzer® II with the Final Analysis Confirmation Tool® (FACT®) scoring algorithm.” The goal is to sway people into having faith in their “scientific” methods, such that they would consider any results from the device as credible.
In fact, it can’t really be said that George Zimmerman passed his lie detector test. The so-called test is backed by no scientific finding. The test that Zimmerman would have passed was the Sanford Police Department test. “Deception: Not Indicated” after answering questions in a way to support self-defense claims only serve as a way for the, then Bill Lee’s, police department to release Zimmerman without charge.
The only thing Sanford police wanted were “the right” answers. Knowing that such tests reveal no truth or accuracy, the analysis was used to determine whether or not George Zimmerman would respond to the two revelant questions with “no” and “yes.”

Top Exec Of Device Manufacturer Says Machine Capable Of Detecting NEITHER Truth Nor Lies
Even NITV chairman and CEO, “Dr.” Charles Humble admits his corporation’s CSVA hasn’t been proven affective by any independent scientific study. Back in a 2006 ABC interview, he stated, “I don’t believe there has been an independent scientific study that shows that this actually works.”
That’s right! They don’t even know that the machine actually works, yet they are making money hand over fist selling this device to police departments all over the country and abroad. Don’t believe us? Well, watch Charles Humble, the company’s CEO, saying it in this ABC interview:
And, to make matters worse, another top executive from the company admitted during a deposition–under oath–that that the machine is not capable of detecting truth or lies.
The test administered to George Zimmerman is supposed to measure his level of stress when lying and telling the truth to control questions. Then, those measurements are compared to his answers to the only two relevelant questions surrounding the death of Trayvon Martin. However, detecting motor indicators of the existence or absense of stress is not an exact science. No connection can be made, or has been made, between stress and motor functions of speech. Thus, no leap can be made from stress to a computer through speech, and certainly not from truth/lies to a computer.
In 2002, a similar conclusion was reached by researchers Darren Haddad, Sharon Walter, Roy Ratley, and Megan Smith of the Air Force Research Laboratory in Rome, NY:
“…a variety of factors could influence the presence or absence of the microtremors, which are claimed to exist in our muscle control during speech production. It is clearly unlikely that a single measure such as that based on the CVSA, could be universally successful in assessing stress (such as that which might be experienced during the act of deception).”

Top Exec Of Device Manufacturer Says Machine Capable Of Detecting NEITHER Truth Nor Lies
Humble’s company is simply in the business of selling a tool for investigators to use to illicit a reaction from interrogated persons. Neither NITV nor police and criminal agencies around the world expect such voice analysis to accurately tell whether or not anyone is telling the truth.
In no way does this bootleg law enforcement tool give credence to George Zimmerman’s lies. It certainly does not vidicate Zimmerman of the murder of an unarmed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. So yes, the test results say that deception was “not indicated” on Zimmerman’s two responses, but what difference does that make when the test is a lie too?!?
And, as an aside, if police forces are using this tool to exonerate folks regardless of its validity, how plausible is it, then, that they are using it to incriminate innocent people? Yeah, this is some BS…
